Cooking Right Along

This week I made Cinnamon Walnut Butter Cookies (with dark chocolate):

Terribly rich, terribly good!

I now have an order for six dozen cookies for someone's church gig this coming weekend. Three dozen chocolate chip, three dozen sugar cookies with colored sprinkles.

Meanwhile, I have a temporary, part-time gig at a local commercial bakery. Not baking, but in the office doing some organizing.

I'm also working on a project with another bakery, which I'll reveal when completed.

And during all this time, I'm thinking what I can do with all this Noro:

I have ideas, I'm just not sure how they'll work out.

Neighborhood Bakery

Unfortunately, it's in the area of my old neighborhood from 19 years ago! I had to drive over there this morning...and it was worth wrenching myself from my warm, cozy bed at 6:30 am!

As you drive up 12th Street (toward Esplande), you'll see the old Peter Pan advert on the side of her building:

And then you see the wee sign out front:

The front of the building:

and if you were heading down 12th Street toward the East Village, you'd see the sign thus:

Walk inside and you'll find the owner, Nikki!

Photobucket

She's been in business three years now, and is a well-kept secret in Davenport! I had to find out about her through the owners of Dewey's Cafe in Bettendorf...

I was there at 7:40 am and look how ravaged her cases are at this point!

I may have been seduced...yes, those are my bags on the counter next to Nikki:

She told me that she uses no shortening in her baking. As I said, "So if it doesn't go "Moo" (butter, milk, cream) you don't use it?" She laughed and said, exactly!

Neapolitans as big as your head, and just divine!

And here, apricot danish, cherry turnover, cream puffs:

Cream Puffs - as big as my fist - with creamy filling inside, and I had a small portion, the rest went to a friend. *swoon*

And the cherry turnover, light, buttery, great texture!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need a wee lie down with a book...and maybe a nap. But y'all? If you're in my neck of the woods? Go visit with Nikki, she's a wonderful person and has fantastic pastries available!

Contrary To Rumors And Some Wishful Thinking...

I still exist, and I'm still knitting! I started out rather large with the Taiyo that followed me home last week, so I frogged it and began again.

This is perfect for width now:

As you can see, Noro yarn has followed me home again, too. While I still cannot get over how harsh Silk Garden feels, I really like the wools and wool/cotton blends:

I'm still baking! Triple frosted (cream cheese) red velvet cupcakes:

I'm still seeking employment! To date, I've applied for 57 jobs. I've had two phone interviews. Two in-person interviews. Two job offers that had to be rescinded due to funding being cut.

Just Wrecked

Knitty will be the death of me. I may attempt to knit this, this winter: Shipwreck Shawl

Oh, and I walked in commencement this weekend:

Comfort Knitting

The Carmelo is not being cooperative. It kept sucking its stitches in, so I thought I had 36 stitches less than I really did...which meant I ripped it back to the neck area, put it in a project bag, and let it sulk in a corner this week.

So, on to comfort knitting. using Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Grande (blue) and their Tweed (beige), I'm making a reading shawl that will be 24" wide and 90" long. (I need a lot of comfort, okay?)

Resistance Is Futile

I just picked up a pattern for Wasabi, The Gregarious Pug.

UPDATE: I've got the yarn now. Click the pics for more info.

(The Universal Yarn site wasn't working, so I've got it connected to another site for the yarn info...)

Belated Birthday News

So, okay...I forgot to blog on my birthday a last week (Thursday). First, the Child O'Mine (aka "Crash") came over...

Photobucket

And brought these beautiful flowers:

Then the once-and-always beau gave gifts of jewelry:

And today, two boxes arrived. From my friend Rose, in Canuckland, and among other items there was a cute cabled tea mug for me:

And also an awesome sheep pen!

The other box was from my friend Alison, in the UK, and she sent over these fantastic gifts!

Yarn Sponsorship

This past weekend, I picked up something I would *never* had considered getting before now. Mainly because I didn't like the feel of it in the skein, but once I decided, "Fuck this, this is my yarn, and I'll wash it *before* knitting with it if I want!" I really like this Kureyon:

I've not decided what pattern to use, but I'm going to make an oversized scarf out of it.

I also picked up another skein of the Schoppel Wolle in the colorway Shadows:

Cranking Right Along

I'm about 70% through the Child O'Mine's Carmelo shrug. She loved the idea of two colors, and so we went with the dark teal and white (Cascade 220, using two strands). Here's the back:

Oh Hell No

I'm being led astray...

I never wanted to do weaving because it was equipment intensive unlike knitting or crocheting.

But this, this here?

Fucking hell...this is trouble. Substitute loom for the pool table:

The Bitch Is Back

Photobucket

Yes, I am.

I've gone back to working each Saturday at my local yarn shop, and some Fridays, too. A good way to earn yarn and grocery money!

There was yarn sponsorship this weekend, and a trip to Muscatine Crazy Girl...more on that tomorrow.
